Despite the mass quantities of lovely plants we eat on a daily basis, not all vegans smell pretty. Take me, for example. When the sun shines in Portland, I am either riding my bike, backpacking in the mountains, or walking around in search of the perfect vegan doughnut (or cookie, or brownie, or pizza). Hours later, a sniff or two is all it takes for me to realize that I STINK! Not to worry, because I recently discovered my new favorite deodorant brand, which just might become your new favorite too!

Confession: Despite my love for the great outdoors, I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to extreme cold. The past week has really tested my tolerance with snowfall happening on several occasions here in the Pacific Northwest. And since my main mode of transportation is my bike, the harsh elements of Mother Nature are taking a serious toll on my lips, face, and hands.
If temps are drastically dropping in your region as well, you know what I’m talking about. But there’s a solution–Shea butter–and I promise it works! If you aren’t familiar with the magical benefits of Shea butter, read on for a little beauty lesson.

I’m always looking for beauty and wellness products to add to my repertoire. I love discovering new vegan products, so when I was asked to check out Essence of Vali, a line of 100% natural products for health and wellness that uses the healing energy of plants, I was intrigued. Essence of Vali has different blends such as Balance, Calm, Detox, Refresh, and Passion, all of which have different products within the line for various issues you may be having or just to improve your daily life. I was lucky enough to check out items from the Sleep and Relief lines.
I was lucky enough to take a weekend trip recently to Victoria BC, which is not only home of vegan curio Sarah’s Place, but also home of vegan owned tattoo shop, Tattoo Zoo. This trip was planned around a guest spot at Tattoo Zoo by an amazing vegan tattoo artist, Eckel, who I’ve been wanting a tattoo from for years. Now, you may be wondering why I keep using the word “vegan” in association with tattoos. Unfortunately, not all inks and balms used in tattooing are without animal products. In fact, some black inks have bone in them, so do your homework, and check this out for more information. After 4 1/2 hours under the needle, I am thrilled to have a tribute to my Nana and a 100% cruelty free tattoo!
As a vegan beauty product obsessive, it’s only natural that I take on a review of Peacekeeper Cause-Metics. Now, you may be thinking, “Cause-Metics”? Yes, you read that right. Peacekeeper is the first cosmetics company to give donations to Human Rights issues for Women; not only do they make beauty products, they do beautiful things for women in need.
…unless you really love patchouli, in which case you should just keep rocking it, as you undoubtedly smell fantastic.
As mentioned in previous posts, going vegan doesn’t mean that one suddenly has to eschew all personal comforts and luxury items. Those of us who have been loyal to particular brands for years and then discover that they test on animals can feel not only disappointed in these purveyors, but also a bit lost at the thought that our tried and true personal style practices are now a thing of the past. When I decided to only buy cruelty-free products, I didn’t have the slightest clue where to look, mistakenly assumed that there were few, if any, ethical beauty products to switch over to, and resigned myself to a bleak future where I’d use kaolin clay in lieu of foundation, and mashed cherries as a lipstick alternative.
