The beginning of a new year may find you feeling many things—optimistic, nostalgic, or just straight overindulged, to name a few—but we want to make sure that you start your 2014 feeling absolutely gorgeous on the inside and out.
That’s why we asked our friend Tashina Combs, founder of vegan beauty and lifestyle blog Logical Harmony, to give us an overview of 2014 beauty trends. From your tresses to the tips of your fingers—and everything in between—Tashina’s got every part of your 2014 beauty regimen covered. Read on!
5 Beauty Trends for the New Year by Tashina Combs of Logical Harmony
1. Orange Lipstick
The bright and bold red lips of winter are being replaced with summery shades of orange. Have fun with this trend! Orange shades are just as versatile as reds. Feeling daring? Try a bright, pure orange. Want something more subdued? Look for pastel coral shades instead.
2. Glowing Skin
Keeping your skin in top shape is big for 2014. Not only should you be doing some extra pampering to help ward off winter dryness and dullness, but start the habits now so that your skin is in top shape for summer. Hydrated skin is a great place to start, so make sure that you are upping your water intake as well!
Want to exfoliate and give your skin a boost? Try this!
DIY Face and Body Scrub
1 Tbsp coconut oil
1 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp sea salt
1 Tbsp lemon juice
Combine all ingredients in a small jar. Mix well. Scrub away, keeping it away from sensitive areas, and rinse off with warm water. If you have any left, store it in an airtight container in your refrigerator. Use once a week.
3. The New Nude Nails
A plain and boring manicure will always be a classic, but the new trend for 2014 is small details. Seen all over the runways in Spring 2014 fashion shows, this trend can easily translate to real life. Partially transparent nail decals, and half moon manicures are a great way to try this out. A good nude shade will be your go-to with some fun options (such as vampy burgundy or a fun glitter) to spice things up! Manicure challenged? 4. Natural, Beach Inspired Hair
Easy and carefree waves will never be out of style. In 2014, really learn how to get an effortless look with minimal effort. In the past, we were told to use several hair products, curl, then brush out on curls for a more natural look. Instead, embrace your natural texture! While wet, spritz your hair with a salt spray, braid into one or two braids—depending on how thick it is and how much wave you want—and then let air dry. Undo your braids and finger comb the curls. Need more texture? Dust some corn powder onto your roots, let sit for one minute, then shake out using your fingers. Voila—Easy and gorgeous beach inspired hair!
5. Pastel Shadows
It’s time to embrace this pretty trend on your lids. This year, pastel shadows are taking on a sheer wash of color. Lavender and white look great on everyone. Keep it very subtle with just a wash of color. Resist the urge to layer on more or add more shades to the mix. Apply one shade over your otherwise nude lids and finish with mascara.
